I created this design for my friend who made the journey out to the Oceti Camp in North Dakota to protest the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline. The oil companies accept the risk of spills. Others do not accept the risk. Protecting water is essential for life on Earth. Legend has it that a giant black snake will descend from the north bringing chaos. The pipeline has been interpreted as that snake…slithering across the prairie, and under and over rivers. Rubber bullets, pepper spray, batons, and water cannons have been used against the Water Protectors. Hundreds have been arrested. Presently, construction has stopped but the main camp, Oceti Sakowin, is still holding its ground through the brutal winter.
The design includes the mythological snake being held by a clenched fist rising from the Iroquois Confederacy Wampum Belt. I included lightning bolts to representl the other forces of the world opposing the snake. #KillTheSnake
I am donating $5 for every Snake Oil shirt sold. The money will go directly to Oceti Sakowin Camp. www.paypal.me/ocetisakowincamp
